Election Commission of India: A Sentry Under Attack

The Election Commission of India has long been central to a healthy working of India’s democracy. But today it faces serious questions about its impartiality and credibility. Ashok Lavasa reflects on the challenges facing the ECI and the urgent need to restore public trust.
Ashok Lavasa, served as Election Commissioner of India and later as Vice President of the Asian Development Bank. In a career spanning 45 years in the IAS, he held senior positions in the Union Government as Secretary of Finance & Expenditure, Environment, and Civil Aviation. He is the author of “An Ordinary Life” and “An Uncivil Servant” and co-author with Novel Lavasa of “Echoes of Faith” .
This annual lecture honours Ajay Gandhi, co-founder of Manthan and a pioneer trustee of the Hyderabad Literary Festival. Ajay passed away in September 2021 at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy of democratic spirit, intellectual curiosity, and public engagement.
