“ISRAEL, THE OCCUPATION AND THE DEMISE OF DEMOCRACY” :- DAVID SHULMAN

Israel, the Occupation and the Demise of Democracy

The Talk

The talk will begin with a personal, eyewitness description of the current situation in the occupied Palestinian territories on the West Bank. Shulman will then discuss the broader political context and also, in simplified terms, the set of factors and reasons that brought us to the present untenable impasse.

David Shulman

David Shulman is a veteran activist in Taayush, a grass-roots human rights organization working to protect Palestinian communities on the West Bank from the predations of Israeli settlers, police, and army. For the past several years he has been mostly in the Jordan Valley with the Bedouin shepherds; before that, for many years he was working in the South Hebron Hills, now known as Msafer Yata. He is Professor Emeritus of South Asian Studies at the Hebrew University, a specialist in the languages and cultural-intellectual history of southern India. He has published three books on the work of the Taayush in the Palestinian territories; most recently The Bitter Landscapes of Palestine, with the photographer Margaret Olin (and 150 strong pictures). His guiding passion, apart from trying to protect innocents from attack and oppression, is for Carnatic music.
